The Power of Line

Line plays a key role when selecting window treatments.

Vertical lines have a stately presence. Edge a group of picture windows with long sleek drapes. Think of the presence columns make in a room or a building facade. Your eyes are drawn from floor to ceiling, absorbing the full view.

Horizontal lines provide a greater sense of comfort. Think landscapes and sunsets. Top windows with a clean-lined valance or cornice to bring the room extra warmth.

Diagonal lines indicate movement and change. Such angles should be used sparingly, but can have an empowering and bold effect.

Curved lines provide a sensual and soft feel. Rounded swag or voluminous drapes can provide a room with richness the brings comfort.

Drapery Flair Tips

Once you’ve selected the fabric for your drapes, there is the question of embellishments and finishing touches. Would you like trim, a border, rosettes or simple tiebacks.

Keep these four tips in mind:

1. Choose a Color
You can decide to use the same fabric as the drapes to create a tieback, but you can also opt for an accent color or a patterned fabric with a solid accent. When pairing a patterned and solid fabric, pick a complementary hue from the patterned fabric. Embellish solid colors with a deeper shad, or if you are daring, an eye-catching contrasting color.

2. Check Workmanship on Tassels & Trimmings
You will find that tassels are available in a wide range of prices from $2 to $70. Hand-made items are often more expensive, but quality is a big factor in price as well. Look to see if the thread used is evenly dyed and consistently smooth in appearance. High-quality pieces should have no visible glue, loose threads or breaks in length.

3. Consider Scale & Proportion
Don’t accent powerful drapes with an insignificantly sized rosette, and don’t overwhelm cafe curtains with an oversized braid when a 1/2-inch border ribbon will do. Use trim to emphasize shape or to bring visual weight to the window space.

4. Less Is More.
Ornamentation should reflect the style of the drapes and the room it decorates. Add flair slowly and precisely so that you do not overwhelm the drapes or the room. It’s an accent, not the focal point.

Window Speak: Tips on Selecting Fabric

The fabric you select for your drapes sets the mood for the room. Whether it is a retro fabric, displayed simply or a more formal, traditional style with swag draping, or flowy, striped-silk drapes.

Here are some tips when selecting the fabric for your room:

1. Decide the color scheme. Whether you are opting for patterned fabric or a solid color, find an inspirational element in the room and build from there. Choose a primary color and an accent color as well as your neutral. The accent color can make a great border or trim on your drapes.

2. Decide your style and choose the right fabric for your decor and your lifestyle. For instance, linen is a stiff fabric, so it is best used for panels. Silk can provide robust draping and a more sensual and rich mood. However, it is also important to consider maintenance. some fabrics need to be dry cleaned while others can be tossed in the wash or are designed to resist sun damage or stains.

3. Understand how the fabric’s pattern, color or opacity will effect the room. Sheer fabrics will permit a lot of light while rich opaque fabrics can warm and shrink a room – great for adding comfort in a larger room, but sometimes overwhelming in a smaller room. Then, some patterned fabrics can affect the perceived proportions of a room.

With these tips in mind, grab some fabric samples and see how they work in your room. Hold the fabric up to the light of the window during the day and at night.

If you have a hard time visualizing, call Sunshine Drapery for a free in-home design consultation. Our designers can help you select the perfect window treatment for a room.
