For increased style and energy efficiency, layer two or more window treatments. Some designs have up to three layers. The first layer usually consists of sheers, blinds or shades. Drapery panels are the second layer, while the optional third layer is comprised of a valance, upholstered cornice or swag/scarf. However, much depends on the way the window works in a room and the decor style.
Increased Energy Efficiency
Cellular blinds are a stylish way to control light, reduce energy costs and create privacy. Paired with curtains that accentuate the height of a room or visually increase a window’s size, the cellular blinds provide a utilitarian need while remaining an equally stylish backdrop to your curtains.

While spring is more notoriously associated with cleaning, fall is a good time to clear off the cobwebs and seasonal build-up before starting the indoor winter hybernation. While it is common to attend to cleaning the comforter, steam cleaning the carpets or air-drying the pillows, window treatments prove occassionally more complicated. This Real Simple article provides a few tips for tackling the dust and increasing the longevity of your window coverings.
Innumerable homes and businesses are outfitted with a blind system that is dangerous to children. The reminder came in an Oct. 1, 2009 article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that talked about a recent incident that left a local child in a vegetative state and a previous incident seven years ago that left another child dead. The risk is particularly associated with horizontal blinds and the corded strings that keep the blind slats in line.
Sadly, in both cases, the dangling strings common on vertical, horizontal and cellular blinds had been moved out of the reach of the children for safety. Yet, the children somehow managed to strangle themselves in the strings that hold together the slats of the horizontal blinds.
Since the emergence of this danger to children came out a few years ago, Sunshine Drapery & Interior Design has placed priority focus on ensuring that cords are secured out of the reach of children and to select vendors that have moved to break-away blind systems. If you have small children in the home, please be cautious about the type of window treatments you use, and do not use horizontal blinds in a child’s room. There are a number of alternative options that provide the same function and available at a range of prices. If you would like to know about alternative options to horizontal blinds, please contact Sunshine Drapery at 314.569.2980.
