We are often asked if it would be possible to add motorization to existing blinds or shades. In short, the answer is usually, yes. Of course, this will depend on the brand, age, and condition of the blind or shade. If you have recent versions of recognized name-brand window treatments, upgrading to motorization may be a very good option for you.
There are many reasons you may want to update your window treatments to a motorized version. If you have young children or pets around your house, products that are operated with cords can pose a safety risk. Motors can completely eliminate operational cords on many products, thereby eliminating this potential hazard.
Some windows are just hard to reach. Motorized operation will allow you to have much more control over privacy, energy efficiency and comfort. Control over these windows gives you the ability to allow warm sunshine to flow in during the winter and to block the heat during the summer. For windows like this, the cost of upgrading to motorized control will be at least partially offset by savings on your heating and cooling bills.
You may also want to upgrade in order to integrate your shades and blinds with home automation controls that are being used to control lights and your home entertainment system. There are ways to synchronize the operation of your window treatments with most of today’s sophisticated control systems.
Here are a few things to keep in mind
- For older window treatments that are not in perfect working order upgrading to motorized operation probably will not be the best way to go. Consult a motorized window treatment expert on whether it will be practical to upgrade your shades or to look at something completely new.
- If you are considering buying shades now and adding motorization later, remember you will be paying some additional labor charges for an upgrade. There are more affordable motorization options now than ever before. Talk with an expert on motorized window treatments to find the right product to meet your needs and your budget.
- For many shades and blinds there are motorization upgrades that won’t require any wiring at all. Battery powered options are available on various products using the most up-to-date, long-lasting battery technology so that they can be powered and controlled completely wirelessly.
My niece have them and they’re very nice but then again she had cathedral windows and look very elegant. I have but a small windows,no pets nor any small children that will pose any hazards. I will strongly recommend them though.
