Great Room

Great rooms were a popular architectural feature in homes built during the 1990’s, and are distinguished from living rooms or family rooms by extra high ceilings and a central location in an open floor plan home. The idea was to create a gathering location near the kitchen and dining areas so that activities could flow from one room into the next allowing everyone to be together.

Because of the extra high ceilings and the large size of most great rooms, it’s necessary to “go big” when it comes to window treatments. In a great room, proportions are just as important as color or style. In addition, it’s important to keep a certain amount of continuity between the kitchen, dining room, and great room as there are usually no walls between them. The key word is continuity which doesn’t mean the same. Similar colors, patterns, or styles used among the three will give each room an individuality, but maintain a cohesive look.
