Simply said, you get what you pay for. I was buying an American flag for our corporate office at a mass retailer on Sunday. I happened to “stumble” across a window covering area and saw panels in packages for as little as $8. Since I'm in that business, I just had to look further and get an understanding of what I was seeing. The ready-made “package” market has come a long way since we started in business. The fabrics that are used in packaged /readymade draperies are using fabrics that are made overseas. Many of the fabrics that custom draperies use are also made overseas because this is just a big part of business and hard to avoid. But this is where the similarities end. [singlepic id=484 w=320 h=240 float=right]With the package drapery, it is made to specified sizes and it is what is called a width if not less of fabric. If you wanted to cover the entire window with drapery panels, then you would buy as many packages as needed and then scrunch them together. With custom drapes, the fabric is carefully sewn together utilizing in the side and bottom hems color coordinated thread. A custom drape that opens and closes will have a lining (usually white or off white in color) on the back to add protection. It will be made so that the drapery is where you want and desire off the floor, but most customers like them to be ½ of an inch typically. Now, you don’t need to have draperies covering the entire window, panels can help with this too. Now the fun is really beginning.
